Common Use Terminal
Equipment (CUTE) emerged in the early 1980s and is now a widely accepted
form of facilitation at international airports but has only recently
gained focus in the U.S. Formal recognition as an industry standard
occurred by the International Air Transportation Association (IATA)
when it developed the first standard specification for such systems
with the release of the initial Recommended Practice (RP) 1797 for Common
Use Terminal Equipment.
To address many of the problems recognized with the current RP, IATA
updated the CUTE RP, calling it Common Use Passenger Processing Systems
(CUPPS). The updated RP was approved by a unanimous vote at the fall
2007 Joint Passenger Services Conference (JPSC). Along with correcting
known problems, the release of the CUPPS RP will eliminate many of the
airline concerns U.S. common use installations.
For the past two years, Barich, Inc. has provided technical leadership
in assisting IATA with the establishment of the CUPPS RP and associated
technical specifications. We are a member of the CUPPS Deployment and
Certification team and have been instrumental in creating the requirements
and specifications for the deployment and certification sections of
the specification. We are also the team lead for the planned pilot implementations
of the CUPPS specification. In this role, we are responsible for coordinating
vendors, airports, and airlines which are participating in the pilot
phase of the CUPPS project. For the CUPPS deployment phase, Barich,
Inc. will provide technical resources sufficient to manage the proof
of concept testing at five selected airport sites, involving the five
current CUTE system providers and many key airlines. This work is scheduled
to commence in 2008.
Barich, Inc. is one of the few information technology (IT) consulting
firms to be an active member of IATA, and is the only IT firm currently
serving on the CUPPS deployment committees and CUSS Management Groups.
Through our work and participation with IATA, we have gained a thorough
understanding of the technical requirements of both CUTE and CUPPS,
along with supporting common use technologies such as CUSS. As a company,
we possess in-depth technical knowledge of current common use installations
in the U.S. and other airports located in North America, Europe and
Asia. In serving our clients, they receive the best and up-to-date advice
available when it comes to common use technology, resulting in quality
designs and installations that benefit our clients far into the future.
